I think the main problem with graphics and game making in general is that developers are swept up in the "me too" gamer culture. When a new feature comes, or a new game with "THE BEST GRAPHICS EVER" its just one development cycle (2 years) away before the feature is... well... a feature of every game, no matter how stupid. Take bullet time for example. How many shooters have that feature for no other reason than Max Payne did it, so therefore it must be cool? The problem with this Spiralling Staircase of Graphic Coolness is that practically every game on the market has great graphics that serve ABSOLUTELY NO PURPOSE in the game. This is the main problem in development, because too many developers spend a year or so making a better graphics engine when they could be improving things like, oh, I don't know, THE GAME maybe. Look at Halo 2 as a not-so-bad example. Most players preferred the original Halo's single player to the sequel's despite the better graphics. This is because-as you will know if you watched the special edition disc- Bungie spent a long time trying to make a technolgically unfeasible graphics engine and came out of it worse graphics than anticipated and a worse than hoped for single player game. The single player is still fun, but not as tense and involving as the original, with too many parts that can only be done one way, which never happened in Halo. For those who don't know what I mean I'm talking about the vehicle areas. In the previous Halo it was possible, but still hard to do, to eschew vehicles in most areas where they were allowed and proceed on foot. In H2, though, Bungie got so carried away with the "more vehicle combat" cries from players that they ctuffed areas of the game with so many threats that you'd better have brought your scorpion because there's no other way to do it. And that's my rant over and done with.

u have a very good point on one of the story's that a hyperlink was posted on the clan it was going on about how sh*t x-box players are, but i think it is more the game developers they focus more on graphics than game play and if a game looks too good it get lag and that just makes it not good, and if the graphics aren't perfect you can have more enemy's one of the best games I've ever played is armed and dangerous and they found a good balance it plays well and looks good, but I'm happy with a good playing game.
